Abstract
Epithelial hyperplasia is a lesion of an abnormal proliferation of epithelial cells. Until now, middle ear epithelial hyperplasia which is mimicking glomus tumor has not been reported yet in the literature. Glomus tumor can be clinically diagnosed as a reddish mass behind normal tympanic membrane and is commonly suspected in a patient suffered by pulsatile tinnitus and conductive hearing loss. We recently experienced a case of middle ear epithelial hyperplasia in a 46-year old woman. Clinical and radiological characteristics of the middle ear mass were identical with those of glomus tympanicum. Pathologic study of the surgical specimen revealed the lesion as an epithelial hyperplasia. Here, we report a rare tumorous condition of the middle ear with the review of literatures.
